WHAT IS AN INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND?

An inclusive playground goes beyond minimum accessibility standards to provide an environment where children (and citizens) of all abilities and needs can interact. “Inclusive” spaces utilize a set of universal design principles that guide the placement and overall function of the play structures, pathways, seating, equipment and other amenities. An inclusive playground is designed for equitable participation that would support the needs of a person with mobility limitations but might also cater to the needs a child who is visually impaired or living with Autism. In an inclusive playground, children, families and caretakers can play together in the same space, regardless of ability, needs, age, gender, culture, or race.

PLAYGROUND BACKGROUND

In 2017, the Green Line LRT project was approved to move forward, and in 2018, construction began on a number of enabling works projects along the Green Line alignment, including in Inglewood & Ramsay.  Through the Green Line project, The City secured partial funding for a new-and-improved playground to replace the play area at Jeffries Park, which was closed to accommodate road and utility work to prepare for future Green Line track and station construction.  The City worked closely with the Ramsay Community Association to find a new location and dedicated volunteers weighed-in on the overall design of the park. Through this process, it was determined that an inclusive playground would best meet the needs of the community.

DESIGN CONCEPTS

  • two play spaces with inclusively designed play equipment

  • ample seating

  • fencing along the south side of the playground

  • natural features

  • unparalleled views of the city skyline
